Stay Safe at Home: How to Handle Cold Callers

At Sussex Grange, the safety and wellbeing of our home care clients is always our top priority. Recently, one of our clients experienced a worrying encounter with a cold caller at their door while they were home alone. Thankfully, no harm was done, but it served as an important reminder that doorstep scams and high-pressure sales tactics are still happening across communities every day.

To help combat this, our Sussex Grange team has created a pack of useful guidance and information to give to our home care clients which contains a sticker issued by UK Trading Standards advising people to never deal with cold calling doorstep traders.

In addition, we wanted to share some practical advice to help our clients, families, and neighbours feel confident and safe if someone unexpected knocks at the door.

It’s Absolutely Okay to Say “No” To Cold Callers

Cold callers often rely on catching people off guard or making them feel pressured into making a quick decision. Whether they are offering home repairs, gardening services, cleaning, or selling products, remember:

  • You do not have to open the door fully.

  • You do not have to continue the conversation.

  • You do not have to buy anything.

A simple: “No, thank you.” is enough before closing the door. Genuine businesses will understand and respect your decision.

Consider a “No Cold Calling Zone”

Many communities now work together to discourage unwanted callers by creating “No Cold Calling Zones.” These schemes often involve neighbours supporting each other and displaying clear signs or stickers on doors and windows.

“No cold callers” stickers can help send a clear message and may deter doorstep sellers before they even knock.

Know Your Consumer Rights

Many people don’t realise they have legal protection when agreeing to services in their own home.

If you agree to a contract worth more than £42 in your home, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off period, giving you the right to cancel without penalty.

Never feel rushed into signing paperwork or agreeing to work immediately.

Never Pay Cash Upfront

A common warning sign is being asked for cash straight away for urgent repairs or work that supposedly needs doing immediately. Avoid:

  • Paying cash on the doorstep

  • Handing over bank details

  • Paying before work is completed and checked

If work genuinely needs doing, take time to speak to family members, carers, or trusted tradespeople first.

Always Verify Identity

Some cold callers may carry ID cards or provide telephone numbers that appear legitimate. However, it’s important not to rely solely on the details they provide. Instead:

  • Close the door first

  • Find the company’s contact details independently

  • Call a trusted family member or friend if unsure

  • Contact the police if you ever feel threatened or unsafe

Never feel embarrassed about being cautious.

When to Report It

Sometimes situations can occur which can make you feel scared or vulnerable. Such situations are unacceptable and it’s good to be aware that help is at hand if you need it. The following useful numbers may help in these scenarios:

Immediate Danger/Intimidation: Call 999.

Rogue Traders: Report to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice at 0808 223 1133.

Non-Emergency Reporting: Call 101.

Looking Out for Each Other
